How Does the SPP Meet the 4 Conditions of Just Sustainability?

Improving qualities of life and well being: The Sustainability in Prisons Project does in fact have positive affects on everyone. They are pushing to bring fresh food sources in every state by creating a national SPP network. In addition to our research on expansion, we will look at how each individual network improves the well being in its area.

Meeting the needs of present and future generations: We all know that in today’s society, a felony is a stain on the rest of your life. The SPP gives their all to not just remove the stain, but to use your prison sentence as an opportunity to start the rest of your life in regards to rehabilitation, education, and a more environmentally aware lifestyle. A big obstacle is still the stigma having a criminal record has, but the SPP hopes to create jobs to avoid criminal-hiring discrimination.

Justice and Equity: The SPP was founded in light of mass incarceration and ecological degradation, both have major racial implications. The SPP opens the door for all incarcerated individuals, regardless of race. However, they do recognize the differing histories people of color have and use their best efforts to try to reach racial equity in prison. We want to look into how this could have an affect on the differing procedures people of color also have in regards to the criminal justice due process.

Living within ecosystem limits: Conserving biodiversity, practicing sustainability, and building a healthy environment while reducing the human and environmental costs of prisons are the foundations of the SPP.
